　　诸葛亮是刘备的军师，六出祁山，屯兵五文原，和魏国的大将司马懿打仗。诸葛亮和司马懿都是足智多谋，善于用兵的角色。诸葛亮一步三算，司马绍三步一算，所以，司马懿怕诸葛亮一脚。
　　当时，诸葛亮年纪已经老了，身体虚弱，还生了严重的肺病。司马懿呢，年纪还不算大，身体也好。论实力，诸葛亮要比司马懿强得多；论年纪，诸葛亮比司马懿老得多，就为这，诸葛亮老是急着想和司马懿打仗，想早点把司马懿灭掉。
　　哪晓得，司马懿也自有打算：你诸葛亮年老病重，活不长了，过几年也差不多了，再过了几年，我的兵力强了，再和蜀军打仗，就不怕不会取胜。就为这，不管诸葛亮下多少次战书，他总是不肯应战，按兵不动。
　　诸葛亮也料到司马懿不肯应战，决定用个激将法：派人给司马懿送去一件礼物：一套妇女穿的凤冠霞帔，外加发钗、耳环、胭脂等。意思是说：你司马懿像个女人，扭扭捏捏，躲在里面不敢出来交战，是个胆小鬼，算不上好汉。司马懿收到礼物之后，先是一气，转而一想，知道是诸葛亮用的激将法，不上他的当。反而头戴凤冠，身穿霞懿，在营门前走来走去。诸葛亮远远望到之后，知道司马懿没有中计，也就没有办法。
　　司马懿想想不服气，你送礼物来气我，我就不能送礼物气你！脑子一转，立即叫人特制了一只饭碗，碗壳做得与普通的饭碗一样大，内里却很小，只能盛下两口饭。意思是：你诸葛亮年老病重，饭量极小，只能吃两口饭，活不长哉。诸葛亮收到这只饭碗以后，知道是司马懿对"凤冠霞帔"的还礼，也只笑笑，把饭碗放在一旁，不去睬它。
　　司马懿经常派人去打听诸葛亮的饭量，总是得不到确切的消息。他决定派出一个使者，借拜访诸葛亮的名头，亲眼去看看诸葛亮到底能吃多少饭。使者来到汉营，诸葛亮心中有数了，立即叫来一个木匠，在台子上做了一只抽屉。到了晚上，诸葛亮坐在有抽屉的一面，酒过三巡，下面送上饭来，使者就留意诸葛亮的饭量了，看看他到底能吃多少。诸葛亮一边劝使者用饭，一边自己也吃起来。这时，诸葛亮已将抽屉拉开，一划一口，一划一口，饭都划到抽屉里去了。乘使者低头吃饭不留意，干脆把碗内的饭往抽屉里一倒，喊声："添饭！"使者一听，心里记住了，一碗了。使者又低下头吃饭了，诸葛亮又把饭往抽屉里一倒。又喊道：“添饭！”两碗了。“添饭！”三碗了。使者听诸葛亮喊了五次，使者一算，不得了，已经六碗下肚了。饭量真不小！这时，使者的饭也已用毕，他想：我倒要看看你怎么下去的。他张大两口眼睛，一眼不眨地盯着诸葛亮，只见诸葛亮一划一口，一划一口，半碗饭很快就吃光了。实际上，诸葛亮的六碗饭，全都划倒在抽屉里了，只有这半碗饭，才是真正的吃下去了。
　　使者回到魏营，向司马懿报告了亲眼看见诸葛亮能吃六碗饭的情况，司马懿不得不信。不久，诸葛亮病重去世，司马懿还不知道哩。
　　此后，人们为了纪念诸葛亮，也感到台子上做抽屉有许多用处，所以后来的台子上，都做有抽屉了。
